Overview

A note template is a model or a pattern so you can easily create new notes based on it, meaning:

Evernote workflow 9.0 supports a simple usage of templates (no rules, just pick a template you already have and you’re done) or more advanced ways so you can automate the process even more.

Usage

Simple way

  1. show Alfred and type the keyword ennt and hit return key
  2. in the next Alfred window, select the note that is your template (you can search it by title) and hit return key
  3. a new note will be opened with the same title, tags and notebook so you can fill it in

Intermediate way (you know the template name)

  1. show Alfred and type the keyword ennt then, after a space, type the note template title then hit return key
  2. a new note will be opened with the same title, tags and notebook so you can fill it in

Advanced way

Templates Storage

You can basically store templates in two ways:

1.1. Store Templates in a Notebook Named Template or Templates

Usage:

  1. show Alfred and type the keyword ennt
  2. type the template title or optionally type the symbol % to list your templates
  3. select one and hit return key
  4. a new note will be opened with the same title and tags so you can fill it in and it will be created in the default notebook

How to save in a custom notebook? In Evernote app, type the notebook name after the template title using one of the following ways:

Note that the new note title, based on a template, will not include the notebook information.

1.2. Store Templates in any Notebook that You Need a Template

Usage:

  1. show Alfred and type the keyword ennt
  2. type the template title or optionally type the symbol % to list all notes and search for a template
  3. select one and hit return key
  4. a new note will be opened with the same title, tags and notebook so you can fill it in

Placeholders in a Template

Placeholders can automate the process in a way that you won’t even need to fill the new note based on a template.

In a template you can use pipe plus a number as a placeholder.

As you can see in the screenshot below there are two pipe placeholders: |1 and |2

To make the workflow fill them automatically you can use the following command in Alfred: ennt Misc (Internet)|John|New Client

This way the new note will have John instead of |1 and New Client instead of |2

In addition, you can use the placeholders {clipboard} and {selection} in a template and the workflow will replace them with the clipboard text content and text selection.

So the new note in the example will also have the clipboard text content instead of {clipboard}.

Last Template hotkey

Finally, you can set a hotkey so the workflow will create a new note based on your last used template and without any interaction at all.
